Rooms where artists remembered why they make art. Rooms where grief could speak and joy could take up space.

I believe in community not as a marketing strategy, but as a living organism; something tender, volatile, holy.

For years, I worked inside brands and companies that promised to build community.

They sold belonging.
They sold empowerment.
They sold sisterhood, artistry, and transformation.

What I realized, not all at once, but in a series of small heartbreaks, is that somewhere along the way, community became productized. Monetized. Packaged. Branded. Optimized.

I can no longer participate in that without speaking about what I’ve seen from the inside.

The Pattern I Can’t Unsee

A charismatic founder has a vision. Often it begins genuinely. A cultural movement, a meaningful gathering, a shared ache for genuine connection.

These founders find talented community builders — people with real relational intelligence, people who know how to tend a room, how to hold complexity, how to metabolize conflict.

These community builders, myself included, are often artists, healers, facilitators. We are people whose wealth has never been financial, but relational. Community builders are rarely trained to value themselves monetarily because our orientation is service, not scale.

The Founder, meanwhile, is often highly skilled at growth, fundraising, branding, and narrative control. So the founder hires the heart. They bring in the people who can make something feel real.

Since heart-centered builders are not primarily money-motivated, we tend to undercharge, overdeliver, and pour ourselves into the vision.

We tell all of our closest friends about it. We sell it easily because we genuinely believe in the vision we’re helping build. We justify it as our purpose. We tell ourselves that we are lucky to be there, that we’re growing and learning.

The founder tells us that we are lucky to be there, too. They feed our ego with verbal affirmation, with connections, with compliments.

The community grows. It becomes magnetic. It becomes meaningful. It becomes valuable.

And that is often the moment everything shifts.

Subscribe now

When Culture Becomes a Revenue Stream

Once a movement gains traction, it becomes an asset.

Investors appear. Scaling conversations begin. Systems replace spontaneity. Brand guidelines replace instinct. This is an inevitable step in scaling a product-oriented business, but when the product you’re selling is people, and the promise of community…this shift creates harm.

Once the focus becomes growth, the founder begins to speak less about people and more about profit.

One time, when asking for a raise because I was working around the clock building the very thing the founder is selling, I was told, “I can’t even really afford to pay you now, but if you bring in 10 new members, then you can get more commission!”

This is the painful part: the very people who make the culture feel alive start to become liabilities.

We ask inconvenient questions.
We notice misalignments.
We advocate for integrity over expansion.

Eventually, we realize that we are building someone else’s empire, not a shared vision.

If we attempt to hold the founder accountable for hypocrisy or lack of integrity, something curious often happens.

The language turns.

“You’re too sensitive.”
“Your standards are too high.”
“You don’t understand how business works.”

It is a subtle alchemy: concern becomes “negativity.” Boundaries become “impossible standards.” Integrity becomes “impractical.” Ethics becomes “scarcity mentality”.

Gaslighting rarely looks dramatic. It looks reasonable, and because we already doubt our financial worth, we begin to doubt our perception too.

Until we can’t anymore. And then we leave — often exhausted, often heartbroken, often quietly.

I’ve played the role of ‘heart and soul’ of brands that started out selling ‘community’ more than 3 times in my 15 years as a community-builder. The sad truth is that this exact pattern happens every time.

I have spent thousands of hours promising friends I trust that they’d be safe, and receive incredible benefits from joining a community, only to learn later about how poorly they were treated by the founders, or how the only value they actually got from what they joined happened when I was in the room.

The most painful part is that after being treated first like a treasure, and then like someone replaceable, I watch these founders share self-aggrandizing videos on social media all about how much they care about belonging while they couldn’t be accountable to the harm they caused behind closed doors.

I watch hundreds of people who don’t know them personally celebrate their “thought leadership” or their “abundance mindset”, while I know they tried to cut costs by not paying my salary half-way through the month.

These founders seem so protected by the consensus reality they’ve cultivated by posturing something artificial, yet when tested by real-life conflict, it collapses like a house of cards. And this is why more whistle-blowers like me don’t ever write about it.

We reframe it as ‘another expensive lesson I had to learn about hypocrisy and narcissism,’ and we keep it to ourselves and watch another young and hungry community builder fall down the same exact trap.

I don’t want someone else to have to make the mistakes I made, which is why I’m choosing to be courageous and say these things out loud.

I’m writing this now because I am seeing ‘community’ being thrown around as a buzz-word, when real community is exactly the antidote to our modern age of deep loneliness and disconnection.

So how do you discern what is a real community and what is just another product being sold to you?

The Red Flags I Wish I Had Studied Sooner

If you are considering joining or working for a founder or a movement that sells community or belonging, look carefully at its history.

How has the founder/founders treated their staff? Not their clients, their staff. This is where true character is revealed.

How is power distributed in the community? Is it shared or hoarded?

How do they address internal conflicts? Is there a public process?

What outcomes do they promise you? If they’re financial, you’re joining a networking or business group, not a community.

How did the founder leave their previous communities or businesses? Were they pushed out? Were there documented complaints?

How safe do you feel in their presence?

Patterns do not disappear because the branding improves.

I once sat in an interview with a founder of an up-and-coming dance brand. After years of being paid $50 for over 4 hours of performance, I was so excited to be considered for a bigger role in the company.

She asked about my previous job. I answered honestly: it had been unhealthy. There were blurred boundaries. Power had been abused, and my previous boss had made me feel deeply uncomfortable.

The next day, I was told I would not be hired because I should “never bad-mouth a previous employer.”

That sentence revealed more than she intended.

It told me she feared accountability.
It told me image mattered more than truth.
It told me that protecting reputation outranked protecting people.

The irony is that this founder now leads a global movement built on the rhetoric of belonging and empowerment.

I know how the internal culture operates. I have seen how the people inside are treated.

This is not a takedown, it’s noticing the inauthenticity behind the promise.

It’s pattern recognition.

The Narcissism of Manufactured Belonging

Not every founder who sells community is narcissistic, but there is a specific type who is.

The kind who wants to be the sun around which everyone orbits.
The kind who confuses leadership with adoration.
The kind who charges people to stand in proximity and calls it sisterhood.

They are not selling actual sisterhood. They are selling access and status.

Often, the more intensely someone markets intimacy, the less reciprocal it is in real life.

Real friendship is mutual.
Real belonging decentralizes power.
Real community distributes leadership.

When a community is commodified, power consolidates upward.

When a community is alive, power circulates.

Why I Believe Real Culture Cannot Scale Indefinitely

Here is the thesis I have arrived at: There is a natural size at which integrity can be maintained.

Scale requires standardization. Standardization requires simplification. Simplification requires flattening nuance, and culture without nuance becomes brand.

Brand can travel.
Brand can franchise.
Brand can be licensed.

But culture? Living, breathing, relational culture is place-based. It is embodied. It requires friction and accountability. It does not scale cleanly because it depends on depth, not reach.

A community cannot authentically sustain its culture or values past ~150-200 people. This has been studied extensively, and the result is always the same. Once it grows past that point, it loses the very essence of what made it so special in the first place.

The communities I have trusted the most are the ones that refuse to grow past what they can responsibly hold.

They do not chase exponential growth.
They do not promise universal belonging.
They know that intimacy has a ceiling, and they respect it.

⸻

My Breakup

I am no longer willing to help package belonging.

I am no longer willing to build empires for founders who confuse devotion with loyalty and loyalty with silence.

I am no longer willing to pour my relational intelligence into systems that will eventually corporatize the very thing that made them beautiful.

This does not mean I don’t believe in community. It actually means I believe in it too much to sell it carelessly.

The rooms I am building now are rooms that can metabolize truth, where power is transparent, and where no one is paying for proximity to personality.

I am creating vetted tables, clearer agreements, shared ownership and real responsibility.

Community is not a subscription model.
It is not a funnel.
It is not a brand extension.

It is a living ecosystem, and ecosystems collapse when extraction outweighs reciprocity.

I have participated in enough extractive systems to recognize the smell.

This is me choosing something else.

About the Author

I’m Katya Stepanov — a polymath artist, writer, systems-architect, community tender and believer in a world where we re-village ourselves into regenerative communal ecosystems to care for Mother Earth and one another. Earth as our creator, and ourselves as her kin.

A world led by principles of Matriarchy: where women are empowered and our children’s wellbeing is the highest priority, creating a thriving legacy for humankind.

A world where we remember that nothing is truly owned, that everything on Earth is borrowed during our lifetime, and that our responsibility is not possession, but care.

A world where we take time to learn the Land we live on by listening to her original stewards, their languages and practices—and integrate the accumulated wisdom of past generations with modern knowledge, orienting ourselves towards a sustainable, symbiotic relationship with the Earth.

A world where we relearn how to live in cyclical, permaculture-based communities, and where we map new ways of organizing life and society that others can follow.

A world where basic human needs are not monetized or monopolized. If the Earth provides it, and you cultivate it, it is free. Food. Water. Air. Shelter. Quiet. Darkness. Light. All can be made available through public infrastructure and reciprocal systems.

A world where we understand that our words and thoughts shape our reality, therefore we consciously choose the words and thoughts we center and share.

A world where chanting, sacred song, rhythm, and prayer are woven into daily life.

A world where ancient oral traditions and modern discoveries are honored together, and we consciously cultivate life-giving harmonics in our speech, thoughts, and collective imagination.

A world where artists, elders, and healers are valued for their contributions and fully supported so they may focus on their work as a community service.

A world where warfare is abolished and recognized as the result of immature leadership rooted in fear and greed. Where leaders unable to resolve conflict non-violently are demoted, and wiser, visionary leaders with alternate solutions are called in until repair is achieved.

A world where prisons are phased out and replaced with restorative justice, where harm is acknowledged, responsibility is taken, and repair is made in relationship.

A world where those struggling with addiction are met with community, given purpose, responsibility, and support, and offered humane, natural paths to recovery whenever possible.

A world where we grow food in living biodynamic soil, repair the damage of extractive agriculture, waste nothing, compost everything, and ensure no one goes hungry on our lush, abundant planet.

A world where materialism is recognized as an incomplete lens— and knowledge, skill, wisdom, and embodiment are valued as the true inheritance we pass to our children.

A world where ancient spiritual laws and cosmologies are honored as the core wisdom left to us by our ancestors, guiding how we live, govern, and relate.

A world where children learn outdoors, through play and curiosity. Where technology is introduced with care, consent, and restraint, protecting developing nervous systems and preserving imagination.

A world where we gather in ritual to honor life’s thresholds—birth, coming of age, loss, recovery, marriage, death.

A world where all humans are empowered to lead, to feel deeply, to express emotion freely, without fear of punishment or violence.

A world that evolves beyond Democracy into Sociocracy—where decisions are made by consensus, and every voice matters.

A world where we invent new forms of exchange beyond imaginary debt, allowing ethical trade across communities.

A world where we relate to all living beings as our relatives— trees, water, rocks, animals, people—and we treat one another as part of a larger family.

Who is dreaming this world with me?

Desire Lines is a reader-supported publication. They explore their unique upbringing as immigrants from the former Soviet Union, their shared experiences of telepathy and extra sensory abilities, and the impact of American culture on their identities. The discussion delves into the importance of authentic communication, the role of psychedelics in expanding consciousness, and the journey of unmasking their true selves. Through their reflections, they aim to connect with others who resonate with their experiences and foster a deeper understanding of the human experience.

The Greatest Plot Twist...

Sometimes the greatest plot twist isn't what happens to you, it's who you become because of it.

Katya's Portal

I am a firm believer that there are no accidents.

The fact that I'm sending my very first newsletter (or, as I like to call it, transmission) on the vernal equinox of my 33rd year feels more like a pre-destined spell than a synchronicity.

On this special day, I am ready to share my visions with you.

Y'all…I've been moving through some massive portals this season.

To give you a quick snapshot of my year since the last spring equinox;

I spent 9 months as a Creative Doula supporting the birth of Jadeva's We Are DFL, a new members club for divine feminine leaders at the intersection of entrepreneurship and spirituality, developing the Conflict Transformation Blueprint with my team at Inheritance Project, supporting three 1:1 clients through their personal portals of transformation, producing eight Resonance Gatherings and providing Human Design Readings to over 30 beautiful souls.

It's been… full, expansive, and at times, exhausting.

It all culminated earlier this month, when I co-facilitated a 6-day retreat for 18 members of Jadeva in the jungles of Tulum.

Tulum became our womb, and I feel truly lucky to be reborn on her shores, to catch her lullabies on the wind and press my hands to the soil of her skin in the temezcal, sweating my prayers with a circle of sisters. Singing to the sky. Dancing in the waves. Embodying freedom.

In the portal we opened together, the heart of my purpose was revealed to me.

My success is measured in love, not profit.

Love is the highest form of beauty and wealth. When you love yourself and others (who are also just you), you are motivated by love to do what you love, and create from love… and it is inevitable that you will be met with the same energy. It is only when we disconnect from our hearts that we create suffering for ourselves and others.

When my actions, my conversations, my relationships, my collaborations, my songs, my events, my dance floors and creations increase the presence of love, I am succeeding in my life's purpose.

This led me to ask myself a question, “What do I love to create?"

“Portals," the answer rose to the surface of my consciousness.

Portals are where magic meets structure - the space where poems originate, where visions take shape and we feel safe to deconstruct and reconstruct into a new form.

I return with a big shift—you’re witnessing the birth of my life’s work.

Katya’s Portal is a synthesis of my 10+ years in entrepreneurship, mysticism, storytelling, movement, and transformation. It’s where my teachings, my artistry, and my guidance all converge.

In the coming weeks, I’ll be unveiling my Portal Membership and the first Metamorph Mentorship program for 8 special souls.

But what is a portal, exactly?

To me, a portal is a liminal space between the end and the beginning. Like a chrysalis, portals are vessels strong enough to hold the space for transformation, allowing you to dissolve your limiting beliefs and structures and activate your imaginal cells, which contain the DNA of who you're becoming.

A conversation that changes your life forever is a portal.

A dance floor where you find ecstasy in movement is a portal.

A breath practice that helps you break free of anxiety is a portal.

Starting a new business is a portal.

A work of art is a portal.

Falling in love is a portal.

Giving birth is a portal.

A prayer is a portal.

A fight is a portal.

A song is a portal.

As someone who has never held a ‘traditional job’, and has always pursued a multi-hyphenate path, I've navigated this liminal space over, and over, and over. Dare I say, I've come to love this space.

With each passage through the portal, I've strengthened my trust, my belief in magic and honed my ability to give visions structure – my own as well as the visions of others.

I open up about this, the launch of The Portal brand, and how The Telepathy Tapes helped me embrace and share my psychic gifts in the inaugural episode of The Portal with Katya, my new podcast.

If you do listen, please drop me a note, or rate and review!

Subscribe now
